A Case of Missing Faces – Where is NEC’s Credibility?
We are not frowning at technology, instead we embrace, kiss and hug it, because it is a necessity where and when necessary. In every four corners of this planet of worries, people yearn for technology – they yearn for a positive transformation. We all would agree that a jet-like pace is rapidly replacing a snail like pace. Don’t we? However, it is high time we learnt that technology is like a fruit artificially designed for hungry men. The worst we could do to it is to harvest it either for consumption or sale when it is unripe.
The biometric registration is an indispensable condiment, considering the tedious registration process formally undertaken by the National Electoral Commission (NEC). It helps in no small way to expose voters’ irregularities in countries such as Senegal.
The case of Sierra Leone is different. Complaints of voters not accessing their faces after being photographed are unending. A clear example in point is the issue of the Sierra Leone People’s Party presidential nominee, Julius Maada Bio was confronted with similar misfortune.
At Sierra Express Media, we are tempted to ask this million dollar question as to whether NEC imported substandard or formally amputated machines, or whether incompetent and less performance oriented personnel are in operation.
To the knowledge of the media, this issue needs a serious coverage cognizance of the fact that the issue of double registration was criminalized by NEC and now here is an issue of multiple snapshots. The embers of doubt are being raised over the credibility of the NEC staff whom evidences have shown that they lack the competency required of them in handling the entire process.
On the backdrop of voter registration apathy grips the process and one wonders how the NEC is able to reconcile the first flaws in the registration process that were discovered in Belgium, and the issue of missing ID photographs?
