Ex-Sojas Protest Again
A total of 263 ex-service military men tagged as Wounded in Action (WIA) on Wednesday July 4 took again to another peaceful demonstration over their pay off package.
The protesting men marched through the various streets of the capital of Freetown and visited the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Internal affairs, and the Ministry of Defence at Tower Hill. They used the Inspector General of Police, Francis Allieu Munu as a go between the WIAs, the president and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.
Speaking to Sierra Express Media, Corporal Turay aka Pastor said the Ministry of Defence is still unable to pay their benefit since their lay-off in 2008 under the class of chronically ill and mentally imbalanced.
He said they took the matter to the country’s Human Rights Commission who staged a tribunal court, which ruled in their favour. The commission he said issued a 21-day notice for the Ministry of Defence to comply with paying the ex-service men, but said they have failed to also comply with their demands.
Corporal Turay said they have noticed that the RSLAF is not having plans to pay their benefit which is why they are going to protest to tell it to the world that their benefits have not being paid.
Another speaker, Albert Kamara said last Friday June 29th they made a peaceful demonstration to State House to see the President, who asked them to form five men committee that would be party to settle down their problems once and for all.
He said when they went to the Ministry of Finance a certain Mr. Sesay told them money was not available in the coffers, but said soon as the finances are ready they would make them available.
