Four Vie For PLDC Chairmanship

Madam Rugiatu Neneh Turay, Deputy Chairperson of the Port Loko District Council has officially declared intention to contest for the Chairmanship position and that she would soon declare to councilors and the electorates of the various wards.

Madam Rugiatu Neneh Turay will contest against three other male candidates for the award of the APC symbol including the current Chairman, Ahmid Munirr Fofana, Councilor Ibrahim Santigie Bangura of Ward 168 Port Loko Central and Nat Kanu, Lecturer at the Port Loko Teachers’ College and of ABBAKO Vocational Institute in Port Loko.

All the four aspirants have made their intention known to the All Peoples Congress (APC) Port Loko District Chairman, Hon. Alhaji Buya Kamara excluding the APC District Executive.

In an exclusive interview with this medium, Madam Rugiatu Neneh Turay stated that her opponents have promised to undertake various development projects if they are awarded the party symbol but raised concern over their commitment and honesty.

Madam Rugiatu Neneh Turay is the founder of the Animation Initiation Movement (AIM), an organization agitating for an end to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Marampa and Buya Romende Chiefdoms in the Port Loko District.

Furthermore, she has encouraged ‘sowies’ who have abandoned FGM to engage in other income generating activities by giving them monthly stipends, constructed a secondary school for girls at Mamusa Village, Gbere Junction at affordable cost and has also immensely contributed in various ways to the development of the district.

According to the Deputy Chairperson of the Port Loko District Council “it is high time for the people to ask all the aspirants what they have done for the community and what they intend doing if awarded the symbol and eventually elected into office but I am confident that if given the opportunity, women can perform equal to or more than men and are less corrupt” and cautioned the people to be careful in choosing a Chairman.

Mama Marie Bangura, an octogenarian and one of the founding members of the APC and other key stakeholders in the district asserted that Madam Rugiatu Neneh Turay is the most popular and qualified candidate due to her invaluable contributions to the development of the district in the areas of girl child education, infrastructural development and women’s empowerment.

The people also revealed that currently Madam Rugiatu Neneh Turay is helping to construct/renovate religious houses, providing jobs for youths and empowering women in income generating activities and called on government that if it wants to actualize the 30% for women, it should award the symbol to Madam Rugiatu Neneh Turay.
