Chairman Civil Society Group Blasts Police
The chairman Kenema Distict civil society group KENDICS, Fallah Enssah Bockarie, has accused the police of multiple human rights violations and are doing little in order to contain violence particularly political, in the region and the country.
Speaking at the Kenema District Human Rights Committee Executive election at Kandeh Street Office in Kenema the Chairman Fallah E. Bockarie accused the police and other state actors of numerous human rights violations. He pointed accusing fingers at the police and the court officers.
The Chairman disclosed that police officers are doing little in eradicating violence in the country. Chairman Fallah Bockarie maintained that they are supposed to be neutral in discharging their mandate of maintaining public security but are often seen supporting the government of the day. He however asked the police be a more professional force for good ahead of the 2012 presidential, parliamentary and local council elections. The chairman intimated that the issue of eradicating violence in the country lies in the hands of the security operative.
In furtherance of his remarks the chairman Fallah E. Bockarie also accused the police of several human rights violations in the region. He said police officers often roughly handled suspects, held long detentions of people without charge, wrongly charged suspects among others. Mr. Bockarie went further by citing cases like changing charges from murder to manslaughter and from manslaughter to murder, maintaining further the Chairman also accused judiciary of dragging cases in court of which the suspects suffered a lot in remand cells. He however asked human rights activists to be vigilant in monitoring the excess of these people.
Chairman civil society Kenema who also doubles as chairman electoral commission Mr. Bockarie asked the human rights committee members to peacefully and honestly vote in the candidate of their choice. He said in any competition there must be winners and losers but that both will embrace each other. The chairman admonished the coming executive to be committed, deligent, and dedicated to their functions. The election however ended with Jeremiah Salia winning his immediate rival 41 votes as against 32.
In his contribution the representative of the regional human rights committee east Sidie Kallon asked the civil society activists to remain focused. He said his office heavily depends on the various civil society groupings in the country. Mr. Kallon informed the groups about the activities of the human rights commission which includes the independence of police council and separation of Justice Minister from the office of Attorney General, among others.
The chairman elect Jeremiah Salia asked all and sundry to work as a team in order to achieve the goal of the organization in the district. He informed all that the election is over and that they should embrace each other as activists.
