Six miners remanded in prison

Six Miners including Amara Kallon, Mohamed Tholley, Ibrahim Conteh, Mustapha, Nayallay Alusine Kamara, and Hassan Kamara, have been arraigned before the  presiding Magistrate His Lordship Mohamed Alhaji Momoh-Jah Stevens of the Magistrate’s court in Kenema for alleged illicit mining within the Gola Rain Forest which has been declared a National Park by the president, HE Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone.

According to the particulars of the offence the six accused persons on Sunday 22rd January, 2012 at Gola Rain Forest Reserve in Normo Chiefdom Kenema District were found engaging in illicit mining of gold.

According to the prosecuting witness Chael Dauda Moijue, he and other forest rangers were on routine patrol within the forest for any unlawful activity including farming, hunting, logging, mining and others in the forest apprehended the poachers.

He went on to say that during their patrol they saw a group of people engaged in mining of gold in the reserved Gola National Park. The witness said of the group they saw; only six were arrested and are the accused standing trial. The six accused persons were all remanded in prison. The case was adjourned for further hearing and Sgt 4907 Charles M.B and ASP Sahr Didi Lahai of Kenema Police Station prosecuted the matter.

In another development a motorbike rider Kemoh Fofanah of 108 Hangha Road, Kenema, has made his final appearance before presiding  magistrate Mohamed Alhaji Momoh-Jah Stevens of  Magistrate Court, Kenema, on three count charges, first count  riding without due care and attention, count two riding without license and count three riding  when not covered by third party insurance risk.

According to the particulars of the crime the accused person on Monday 16th January, this year was arrested by Sgt 1600 Kargbo of Kenema Police Division along Hangha Road, Kenema, with   motorbike, Registration No.AG 234 and charged to court for riding motorbike with Guinean License and the other subsequent offences above. The accused pleaded not guilty but the court later found him guilty and was sentenced to nine (9) weeks imprisonment or alternate fine of Le 210,000 cash.
