Coming as media partners of the CTO conference
The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO) has just concluded a three days conference in Freetown discussing the future of ICT development in rural areas.
The conference is the 7th annual Connecting Rural Communities Conference under the microscopic theme, “The road to rural broadband: making the economics work”.
The just concluded conference hosted members from all the 54 Commonwealth of Nations countries who among them are experts in the various fields of Information Communication and Technology (ICT).
The various presentations done by telecoms stakeholders gave highlights of the improvement strides ICT has made in the last decade in Africa especially targeting the broadband networking campaign and its wider rural connectivity networks with special looks on accessibility and affordability of the consumer users.
The president Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma and his Minister of Information and Communication, Hon. Ibrahim BenedICT Kargbo, brought glad tidings to the conference to inform the members present, on behalf of their various organizations, that the Government of Sierra Leone is in the process of uploading the fibre optic backbone in preparation for the landing of the submarine cables to enhance the expansion of broadband ICT connectivity in Sierra Leone and affordable its cost to the accessible users.
The issue of poor rural networking for poor Africa countries was discussed with preferences measured in the option of building communication towers which as well have a bigger width to provide network solution than one could access from satellite sources which are very much expensive. This brings the issue of running cost and the availability of power supply to especially targeting rural areas without electricity supply. As it is the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization is not a treaty organization to meet resolutions at the end of the three days conference, but the multi-national advantage it has is that it creates a platform for sharing of ideas and cross references with sample models others can learn from.
For example the Helios Towers ideas currently being implemented in Ghana is good optional development in the telecom industry as it saves cost and improves quality stamina to the market trends in that it helps others without a bigger resource to establish their broadband business without going through the strains of challenging to build whole new towers.
Avanti HYLAS is another with a technology that still uses the satellite service as a linking source to deliver high-speed KA-band technology at low cost.
These are developments the telecommunications industry has witnessed in recent times.
