MP accuses forest guards of brutality

Freetown, 20, June 2012 (SLENA): Member of Parliament for Constituency 19 in the Kenema district Hon. Magnus B. Kallon has disclosed to SLENA that over ten residents of Baoma Chiefdom have suffered seriously in the hands of forest guards of the Gola Forest, resulting from injuries and destruction of properties worth millions of Leones.

Hon. Kallon cited an incident that occurred on the June 15, 2012 during which the Gola Forest Guards accused residents of invading the gola forest, noting that the guards had gone beyond their mandate of destroying personal proprieties.”They should have lodged complaints to the police instead of taking the law in to their own hands,” he added.

Hon. Kallon urged authorities concerned to look into the issue as the people in that community have been seriously affected by the destruction of their livelihood.

He said as a member of parliament representing that part of the country, he took the issue very seriously, saying that he has written letters to various concerned authorities so that action will be taken.
