The Politics of Semantics and Plural Cases
Following the unfolding of politics in the country, Sierra Express Media makes sense of Sierra Leone’s politics by the aura of its language.
Words such as ‘stronghold’ and ‘regionalism’ have formed a tune of semantics. Also ‘switch of allegiance’ and ‘cross-carpeting’ are others.
Garnering the switches of allegiance is one point to determine a suicide note of political pluralism. It means, if all the politicians that matter are encircled into one clout [sic], a one political dynasty would be the second filial generation.
But it has a sword between which is regionalism. In the country, politics is argued on stronghold phraseology; and each stronghold has got major tribe settlers, dominating the platform. Some politicians have been giving tribal marginalization as excuses for leaving political parties. The same string applies in seeking the votes – ethnocentrism implies. Those with the mentality to vote on tribal lines, have drawn lines between tribes to further divide the country into Temne North, Western Area being a –general zone; and a Mendes South, East on a concentration basis.
Snitches are in both camps, as the spate of political crisscrossing makes headway.
As a medium, we ask where the future lies when it seems that our politicians are having a dearth of honesty and sincerity?
The cross-road from this juncture is for all to be able to determine the plural case of politicking and its rescue measures.
Sierra Leone has been through a one party system. We need to look into the past and at the moment, multi-party politics is in play with a fiat of democratic values – thus the cross line between totalitarianism and democracy.
The one is of one option, and the other is of multiple options, the choice is one all should make.
