According to reports, the deceased was an ex-member of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces who recently retired but decided to use the proceeds from his gratuity and bought a bike which he uses to eke out his daily living.
The late Mohamed Quares used to reside at No. 18 Cole Drive off Regent Road, Lumley before his demise.
Area sources confided to this reporter that the late Mr. Mohamed Quares met his death at the hands of a certain Delta police who shot him from the back on returning from Ogoo Farm where he dropped a passenger off.
The same sources said a checkpoint was being manned by OSD personnel at the Goderich-Adonkia axis and that the late bike rider failed to respond to a police halt order and the police in question had to trigger some shots on his back.
Talking to members of the Bike Riders Task Force on the issue, the Financial Secretary, Sarjoh Bah said they heard of the news that one of their colleagues was shot dead by the police. He said they went to Adonkia to collect the human remains of their colleague and were thwarted to realize that the bike of the late man was missing.
A little scuffle arose, he said, and members of the Okada Union went haywire. He said they had divided opinion as to where the remains of their colleague should be taken. Whilst others say he should be taken to Lumley/Regent Road, others were saying the corpse should be taken to a funeral home so that a befitting funeral would be arranged for the 36 year old. Another group, he said were also of the opinion to take the remains of Mohamed Quares to the president in protest to what the police had done.
At this juncture, Sarjoh said, full squads of police were seen taking positions and started beating and mistreating people up to the point where they had to fire canisters of teargas to disperse the rioting crowd.
Moreover, one Mr. Marrah who claims to be an Executive Member of the Bike Riders Union said the police have been in the habit of chasing them with spikes and in each case they succeed they usually confiscate their bikes. He said they have two recent cases where the bikes of two of their colleagues have being confiscated by the police.
Meanwhile, the deceased, Mr. Mohamed Quares is survived by his wife Kanko Quares, Nee Janneh and four children, 15 year old Mohamed Quares who is the eldest, 12 year old Fensara Quares, 6 year old Saio Quares, and a two months old new born baby.
Family sources revealed that the remains of the late Mohamed Quares are going to be taken to his home town of Farawa, Kabala in the North of the country, to be buried on Monday, June 18.
According to the bereaved family the Inspector General of Police Mr. Munu is doing everything possible in providing transportation and logistics for the funeral rites to take place in Kabala.
The same source said the IG has requested for more vehicles to be able to convey the remains of the late man together with the entourage accompanying the body.
Meanwhile police sources say the Delta man accused of murdering in cold blood the late bike rider has been arrested and was due in court today .
