Child Labour and Our Children
Sierra Leone is one of the countries having a huge number of children being used for child labour. According to headcount surveys and statistical indexes available with Street Child Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs, Help A Needy Child Sierra Leone (HANCi-SL) and the United Nations Development index, over 500,00 children are involved in economic activities – eking out their living. In Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone, many children do serve the role of street wards selling cold water, washing cars, scouting the litter bins, squatting in squalid areas including living and working in the various streets. We have a seldom case where charity organizations such as the Don Bosco children’s orphanage, the Raining Season kids orphanage, the SOS children’s village are able to provide adequate support to the soaring number of children in the country.
Child labour has got many factors culminated from the lack of parental care and support, early marriages, commercial sex, lack of knowledge on how to apply family planning methods and uncontrolled births. Many people are indulged in the habits of luring women into giving birth to too many children, much as they could with tradition and culture playing the hide and seek game of excuses.
The society of Sierra Leone is one victim of the fact that some of the children who are raising themselves up in backgrounds such as street dumps grow up to become thieves and crime bandits – the result which currently insulting the decency of Sierra Leoneans.
These dregs of society are not only viewed as mast despicable, politicians always capitalize on their status by placing them under the influence of drugs and narcotics and have been paying society back with untold indecencies.
We at Sierra Express Media see the need to curtail their number and our solution for such is for the government to collaborate with charity organizations in charity fold to ensure quality life for those children. Many children have potential talents but like the destiny song stated their future lies in the hands of those with special facilities to do so. We join the emancipation on the right of street children campaign and call on all to enhance support in both creating the awareness and lending support to the cause of these children.
