WHB Conteh Songowa declares intention for Constituency 61, Tonkolili district
Texas, USA, June 3rd: When President Ernest Koroma promulgated the agenda for change, many Diasporas hastily rushed into politics. Some into premature campaigns for most of the elected positions they are aspiring for. Because the agenda for change which among other things encompasses gender and equality, Wullaimatu Hannah Bundu Conteh Songowa (in photo) declared her political ambition to be the 2012 parliamentary representative for Constituency Ward 61 in the Tonkolili district.
Saturday, May 19th was the first time she declared publicly her intention to run for parliament in a fundraising campaign held at her brother’s home, Mr. Hassan Bundu Conteh in Maryland, USA. She has actually started rallying prominent people since last year in that constituency by setting up an effective campaign team that will formulate and implement the strategy needed to win the party symbol and the general elections.
The fundraiser attracted many politicians, party members, independents, community outreach activists, philanthropists, and co-workers. The presence of the APC/NA members such as the Washington APC/NA chapter president, Mrs. Yabome Sesay, former chairman of the North American branch, Mr. Osman Conteh, dignified the aspirant’s fundraising campaign. Another fascinating activity in that meeting was the paramount role played by the organization, Yoni United States Association (YUSA) in Washington.
Mrs. Songowa’s high profile campaign has hit the ground in the constituency demonstrating that she seeks the interest of her poor people. Although she is away from the country in the moment, her dream for the enhancement of education and the provision of better healthcare facilities in her district remains closely in her heart.
The decision taken by the aspirant to run for parliament has always been connected to what she believes in the APC party which respects the challenges of the millennium. It is worth mentioning that Hannah’s qualification, experience, and character value convinced people from all walks of life to organize a fundraising for her in the United States of America.
Despite the values upheld by the party to serve every tribe and religion in the country, Hannah is also concerned about important issues like poverty in our society today which she believes the APC party is strongly challenging.
Realizing the worthiness of her political ambition to run for Parliament, Mrs. Songowa was successfully able to galvanize a great number of her APC party members in Washington and even some of her friends who are in the opposition side to come together and organize an incredible fundraising drive for her political ambition.
Speaking with the former APC/NA, Mr. Osman Conteh in an interview, he reiterated that Hannah would be the right candidate who would not only seek the interest of her party, but also act in everyone’s interest. Mr. Conteh believes that the aspirant met the various eligibility requirements such as being widely prevalent in the community in Washington and as an eloquent speaker; ‘I cannot stress how essential a cohesive and relevant representative she will be in our noble party”, he concluded. I wish her people would not disappoint her in presenting Mrs. Songowa for the APC party symbol,” he added.
The Master of Ceremony (MC) for the occasion, Mr. Sallu S. Fullah who is also the candidate’s chief advisor, explained to the fundraisers that, WHB Conteh Songowa’s many activities and affiliations have brought her the right to represent her people in Yoni chiefdom. Mr. Fullah reminded the audience about the background of the aspirant’s father, Pa Alie Bundu for his humility and integrity during his life time. He noted that the father has been a tower of strength and strong force for progress and efficient chiefdom service. Mr. Sallu Fullah also believe that, Hannah, as he calls her, in all of his dealings with her, have always shown patience and tolerance. Two qualities she needs to represent the people of Sierra Leone in any level.
It can be recalled through the series of interviews I have conducted from back home in the constituency that, WHB Conteh Songowa is the front runner whose campaign trail keeps the engine stoked with a steady flow of funds and logistics coming from different angles. She is presently seeking medical and hospital equipments from donors here in the United States to contribute to President Koroma’s free healthcare program for women and lactate children.
A Nigerian philanthropist, Dr. Chris Egbulem of the non-profit organization, African Action, has offered a huge quantity of hospital equipment to the aspirant to accelerate her campaign effort in her constituency. The African Action organization is geared towards capacity building and partnership development in support of overseas development programs. Hannah expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Dr. Egbulem whom she said has got her to realize her life-long ambition to help the poor.
Observers believe that Hannah will achieve her goal because she has been an extraordinarily generous person to everyone without prejudice. Some members of her political party, APC North America described Hannah as someone that can easily be influenced to attend to an etiquette social call. “Her fame in the constituency actually rested on her reputation as a well trained Registered Nurse (RN) sufficient to gain her a huge following”, Mrs. Richard S. Kargbo a campaign manager in the town of Mathior said.
There are certain requirements that a person aspiring for parliament in our country must have and among those qualifications that humble touch that the down-to-earth approach to problems is what W.H.B Conteh Songowa possessed. That is why the people of Constituency 61 are ready to honor and welcome their future honorable as a distinguished representative.
