Govt set to liberalise telecom gateway for effective and quality service delivery

It is the responsibility of every government to ensure citizens get quality service. The Government of Sierra Leone has demonstrated interest in upgrading the Telecom industry. However consultants have told the government that they should liberalize the gateway and encourage public-private partnership for quality services.

According to feasibility studies done by the government deregulation will encourage investors in the Telecom business. This will help the country in so many ways.

  • Liberalizing the gateway will create employment for the youths by 10%.
  • Investors will establish businesses here which will accelerate economic growth thereby increasing our Gross Domestic Product (G.D.P) and our standing in the human development inverse
  • Increase access to information for student who is in Secondary School and Universities, because once gate way is liberalizing the cost of the access to the internet will be cheaper.  This will encourage student to do assignments researches and courses online thereby making education accessible and cheaper.
  • Liberalizing the gateway will also encourage a lot of youths to do Information technology related courses since the companies will need such qualifications this will encourage youths to be technically trained.
  • The people of Sierra Leone and Government will benefit from the taxes this company pay to develop the infrastructure of the country such as roads and bridges.

Statement from the government, read that the need to liberalize the gateway in order to get rid of the monopoly exercised by Sierratel and enable a Public-Private Partnership for a more efficient Telecom industry. The gateway has been monopolized by the national telecom industry Sierratel for too long. The Act of liberalize the gateway is expected to be submitted to government by July 15 2012.

The President and Minister Information and Communication expressed interest in the liberalization process. During the landing of the fibre the President Ernest Bai Koroma acknowledge the fact that the Fibre Optic Cable will be more effective when its gateway is lberalized. Visiting the landing site of the Fibre Optic Cable at Lumley Beach Road on Friday 18th May 2012 the Minister of Information and Communication Mr. Ibrahim Ben Kargbo said the liberalization process will involve a Public and Private Partnership for effective service are also said the terrestrial back bone will be installed to make sure to connect whole country to ACE cable.

Finally Mr. Julius Kamara Project Coordinator of West Africa Regional Communication Infrastructure Project (WARCIP) said the 95% of the installation part has been completed. He also said that come October 2012 operation will begin.
