NYC boost Bumbuna Youth Group in Sierra Leone

NYC boost Bumbuna Youth Group in Sierra Leone

The National Youth Coalition took the bull by its horn to donate to Young People of Bumbuna Town in the Kalasogaia Chiefdom, Tonkolili District. The donated items include a full set of DSTV multi choice facility, television set and other electrical equipment for youth development and livelihood. It can be recalled that economic and other social development activities were stalled as a result of violence that was perpetrated by angry youths. Ishmael Al-Sankoh Conteh is the President of National Youth Coalition. He informed the gathering over the weekend that wherever there is mining activity, there are potentials for growth and development. He noted that at the same time there is the tendency to have a floating population that comprise of mostly job seekers and other vulnerable youths.

The NYC President revealed that young people have the potential to change society from grass to grace, and this is why his Coalition is there to see that they are empowered to take up leadership positions in every positive aspect in society. The items donated, he said will serve as education materials for young people in Bumbuna Town, as they will learn about current events in the world and also see the consequences of violence in other countries. Mr. Conteh reminded the youths that the items are donated as a result of a promise made by the Coalition during a peaceful meeting held in the town which aimed at resolving the violence that erupted. “I hope the donated items will be utilized well and I want to assure you of further support,” he premised. He concluded by admonishing the youths to be steadfast in their daily work, and added that they should be united and collaborates with other youth groups to enhance development at community level.

Youth Leader of Bumbuna Town, Gibrilla Bonkay Kamara said the donation is not a surprise to them because the NYC is always there to support youth development activities. “This is the first ever donation made to the Bumbuna Youths,” says the Chairman. He reiterated the fact that not everybody not everybody will gain employment from mining companies, but warned that the youths should not be idling around and at the same time complaining of unemp0loment. “We want young people to engage themselves in educational ventures in order to cope with the challenges they are faced with,” Kamara said. He promised that the items will be used for their intended purpose. He however informed the NYC that the Bumbuna Youth Group is young and so therefore needs lots of nurturing. He urged the NYC to support them and provide more avenues that will take the minds of young people from violence.

Francis Turay is the Treasurer described the donation as a boost to young people in Kalasogoia Chiefdom. He lauded the fact that the NYC intervention came at the right time after the visit of President Ernest Bai Koroma last week. He said the Youth Coalition is working in line with the aspiration of President Koroma, which is to ensure a law abiding and violence free society. He noted that even though Bumbuna is said to be the nucleus of economic development of Sierra Leone, there is a need to provide more development opportunities to young people. The donated items, he said will also create jobs for young people.

Chairman of the ceremony, Salieu A.B. Kargbo promised that the NYC will contact its development partners to provide a fishing boat and other support to the youths. The NYC National Secretary General admonished the youths not to solely concentrate on mining but other social development activities that empower them.
