IRC ends stakeholders meeting in Kenema
A Non-Governmental Organization, International Rescue Committee (IRC) has ended a day long stakeholders meeting on Community Monitoring with Scorecards and Non-Financial Awards (NFA) at the new District Council Hall, Nyandeyama Road, Kenema.
Welcoming the participants, the chairman of the Kenema District Council who doubles as chairman of occasion, Mr. Patrick Samu, said that this has not been the first time he is witnessing the IRC programme.
He reiterated that IRC is one of the development partners that is helping the government of Sierra Leone and he called on other NGOs, both local and international, to copy the good works of IRC.
In his overview statement, the Reproductive program manager Tamba Sam said the government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Financial and Economic Development (MoFED)-Decentralization Secretariat (DecSEC) and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) is partnering with selected NGOs to pilot an intervention designed to improve the delivery of primary health care service. He said the intervention focuses on maternal and child health posts and community health posts, the most basic units of health service delivery in Sierra Leone, in four districts Bo, Bombali, and Kenema Tonkolili. Implementing NGOs are IRC in Bo and Kenema, concern in Tonkolili and Plan in Bombali.
He further said that certain clinics in the district have randomly selected to participate in a community monitoring with scorecard intervention, while others have been selected to participate in a competition for a non-financial awards from the MOHS and that the remaining PHUs have been selected to act as control PHUs and carry out activities as usual.
Tamba Sam reiterated that 22 clinics in Kenema district have been selected to participate in the community monitoring with scorecards intervention component of the project. And that CM intervention will involve a series of meeting with clinic staff from these selected facilities and community representatives within the selected PHU catchment areas to discuss their current health issues and to identify ways of improving them through joint community-facility action plans.
In the non-financial awards Tamba Sam said that this intervention aims to motivate health clinic staff by offering a non-financial award to staff at the 20% “best improving” health clinic, best performing MCHP, and best performing CPH. He said 22 clinics in Kenema district have been randomly selected to participate in a competition for a non-financial award from the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.
In his closing remarks the chairman admonished the participants to make good use of the opportunity as it is of great importance.
