Security Compromises: a growing concern for government

Now that the country is being willed towards the wooing of investors to invest in various areas of development, security concerns should be held paramount as frequent breach of the country’s security has the potential to stalemate the effort of the president to court investors to the country in pursuance of his agenda for change.

It is inarguably true and as was indicated by President Koroma in the last Investment Conference on Sierra Leone held in London; that one of the factors that drove investors away from Sierra Leone is the precarious security situation that hovered around the country for close to 15 years. The war and other security factors militated very greatly against the growth and development of the country in an untold number of ways.

Now that the war is over and the country is gradually moving towards the achievement of a comprehensive development drive we would not want to be seeing reckless security situations factoring against the intended development dive championed by the president in his Agenda for Change.

Just before the holding of the recently concluded Investment Conference on Sierra Leone in London, the country was blighted by a frenzy of untold and notorious armed robbery incidents; to the extent that President Koroma had to call in the Military Aid to Civil Power-MAC-P.

All this while, the media and Sierra Express Media in particular, had been reporting the involvement of members of the Sierra Leone Police in such evil acts as there was no way one can extricate incidents of armed robbery in the prolific and well orchestrated way it occurred from the involvement of some sector of the country’s security outfit. It turned thus that z few months after the institution of the MAC-P that high profile officers in the SLP got caught and are presently running trials at the court of law.

Now it is the same with the Sierra Leone Prisons as incidents of riots and smuggling of contrabands being orchestrated by senior officers at the country’s maximum prison. There is no way one can dismiss such a security compromise to the same that was being undertaken by elements of the SLP thanks to the stance of the newly appointed Director and other members of the security sector who have promised to get at the bottom of such sabotage. The officers at the Pademba Road Prison would want to make believe that their action is to sabotage the office of the Director, failing to realise that they could be putting the efforts of the President’s Agenda for Change in jeopardy.
