President Koroma visited the people of Nyandehun on Sunday
The first visit ever to the Southern town of Nyandehun by any sitting President of this nation took place on Sunday when President Koroma, upon the request of the people through the Resident Minister South, Honourable Moijue Kaikai, honoured the invitation for a visit to their township. The occasion was preceded by singing and dancing from local dance groups – prominent amongst them was the famous “Ngorboi” and “Ordeh” masquerades. It was a moment filled with joy and emotions as clearly expressed by the Paramount Chief of Kakua Chiefdom, Prince Lahai Boima; reiterated by the Section Chief of Nyallay section, Mahei Sellu; and the people themselves. The people of Nyallay invited President Koroma to come and see part of their initiatives of building a local Court House (Court Barri) as part of their self-empowered endeavours in this Chiefdom. The section Chief of Nyallay thanked President Koroma for honouring their invitation, stating that they are happy to receive the president as their son and Grandfather in this vibrant chiefdom. The President expressed his happiness and stated that he was equally impressed by the people’s initiative, noting that government cannot always satisfy every sector of the people’s needs but can step in, from time to time, to lend a hand of support and assistance to projects that the people may undertake on their own. That hand of assistance drew thunderous applause and jubilation when the President announced to the crowd that his government would offer 20 bags of cement; 10 bundles of zinc; some bundles of iron rods to help them complete the Court House. In addition to that, the President also donated footballs and sets of Jerseys to help promote the psycho-motor development of the young men and women in this township and its environs.
President Koroma also thanked the women for their active role in regional and national politics, adding that it is now evident that their participation has fostered the successful accomplishment of the “Agenda for Change” as the nation now prepares to enter into the new “Agenda for Prosperity”.
Delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the leadership and people of Nyallay, Chief Vela, of Sewa Section, thanked the President for his great attitude and ability to come down to the grass roots and identify with their problems. He also thanked the Paramount Chief, Prince Lahai Boima, for his great leadership and tenacious approach to matters of the Chiefdom. Chief Vela also thanked the Section Chief and lauded the efforts of the APC District Chairman, Alhaji Sillah, for his courage and submission to the tenets of the party’s agenda amidst the challenges and opposition. Perhaps the most touching revelation of Chief Vela’s vote of thanks was his appreciation, on behalf of the people of the Southern Province, of the Resident Minister, Hon Moijue Kaikai, whom he described as “the man who fulfills every promise he has ever made”. Chief Vela, in a form of litany, catalogued all the promises the Resident Minister has made and fulfilled to the people of Kpetema; Konima; Waterloo; Fengehun; Tongae; Nyandehun and many other towns in the southern region even at last minute notice. This was followed by simultaneous and thunderous roar of “Yes, it is true” from the crowd. The occasion was sealed by the usual traditional presentation of a ram and a 5 gallon container of palm oil to the President as a handshake and token of appreciation (Famalui). Resident Minister Kaikai took the opportunity to introduce the aspirants for the APC party symbol for Constituency 70 in which Nyandehun is located. He proudly revealed to the president that while the APC party was struggling to get a candidate for this Constituency during the 2007 elections, the party now has 5 aspirants for the 2012 elections. This, he stated, was the result of the efforts of the great men and women who are supporting the APC party and helping to spread the President’s agenda around the Southern region of the country. The event ended with prayers recited in the Muslim and Christian fashion.
