President Koroma calls for more youth empowerment

President Dr. Ernest Koroma has Thursday called on the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) International to do more for youth empowerment in Sierra Leone in order to upgrade the potentials of young people.

The President made the appeal while addressing members of YMCA International during a courtesy call on him at State House, Freetown ahead of the organization’s one hundred years celebration of youth services in Sierra Leone.

“We do realize the great potentials of our youths which is why we have established the National Youth Commission and the Agenda for Change has put formidable structures in place to provide the requisite training for the overall transformation of young people”, he said.

President Koroma recalled that Sierra Leone’s past has been terrible and the most affected people are youths, therefore these challenges must be addressed now through the development of the middle-level man power of young people for their proper transformation into useful citizens.

“We need to do more now for youths because of the rapid changes that are now taking place in the local labour market as well as the skills requirements. Therefore, we need more skills and more resources for young people”, he said.

YMCA National General Manager, Christian Martyn Kamara congratulated President Koroma for the good work that he is doing in the country, the establishment of the National Youth Commission and informed him that YMCA is celebrating its one hundred years of provision of youth service in Sierra Leone.

He said the Agenda for Change is synonymous with the activities of YMCA adding that his organization provides supports to enable young people become self-reliance.

World Alliance of YMCAs Secretary General Reverend Johan Vilhelm Eltvik said Sierra Leone has become so proud internationally in the last four years because of the developmental programmes the country’s leadership has been embarking on.

He informed President Koroma that the YMCA is working in close partnership with his government in the areas of youth empowerment.
