Six drug peddlers face court action
Unisa Bangura and five others are to face court action today, Thursday April 19th. According to sources at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the accused persons were charged with six count charges of contravening Section 17 of the Pharmacy and Drugs Act of 2001, which prohibits illegal possession of pharmaceutical products without licenses, contrary to Section 59(1) of the said Act.
The accused persons were caught in possessions of drugs such as Mebenda tablets, Brufen, Paracetamol tablets, Cod Liver Oil capsules, Solotone tablets among the others last Saturday April 14th at Sackville Street, Freetown.
The matter is being presided over by Magistrate Komba Kamanda of Court No 2.
According to comments of some Pharmacy Board members, many are calling for the court to fine the accused persons with serious penal sentences. Many said people with ailments should inculcate the habit of buying drugs in the certified pharmacy outlets across the country.
