“Gov’t.should sponsor Radiology Study” -Dr. Abu appeals
As Sierra Leone joins the world to celebrate the 11th ‘World Radiology Day’ on 8 November every year, a Sierra Leonean specialist in Radiology and Sonography, Dr. Tamba Meshach Abu, said that the government should sponsor medical students to study Radiology overseas.
He made the statement as an appeal to the government, as he said the medical sector (Radiology and Sonography) only have quite a little number of personnel with vast experience across the length and breadth of the country; and that has become a burden to the sector because patients reporting such cases are on the rise, and majority of these patients don’t have the money to go to private facilities. “I’m appealing to the government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to sponsor medical students to study Radiology abroad as the department is starving for enough personnel (Radiologists),” he said.
As the Anniversary marks the discovery of X-ray in 1895, the purpose of this day is to raise public awareness of radiographic imaging and therapy, which play a crucial role in diagnosis and the treatment of patients, and most importantly ensuring radiation required, hence improving the quality of patient care.
