Youth President calls for rights of street children to be recognised
The leader of Young Leaders-Sierra Leone, a nonpartisan youth advocacy group, has called for recognition of the rights of street children in Sierra Leone.
Unisa Dizo-Conteh Jr. says: “Very often these children are treated as stray dogs who don’t have any rights.”
“It’s high time our leaders and the entire society do the right thing to remove each child off the street, “says Dizo Jr. Adding: “children on the street need everyone’s support to ensure they too can make a positive contribution to their communities.”
A strong advocate for the rights of children and youth, Dizo Jr. says “street children are one of the most vulnerable groups in societies, regularly faced with, among others, neglect and brutality.”
Speaking exclusively to Sierra Express Media on the International day for Street Children, Dizo says “a child on the street is a very important issue that needs to be addressed.”
The International Day for Street Children, marked on 12 April, was launched in 2011 by a Consortium for Street Children (CSC).
