Need to protect our eco-tourism potentials.
Sierra Leone’s eco-water system is suffering a major degradation. Sand miners have evaded our country’s beaches exposing them to water sheds. Visiting Lakka, Borbo, and policing beaches around the peninsular areas, one can tell that sand lifting has disrobed the beauty of those once beautiful tourist destinations.
To refresh our minds, the issue of keeping our beaches safe has always been the focus. It could be recalled that some sea weed evaded the territories of our beaches some time ago an event that led to some bad experiences, now water waves are hunting building shapes near the coastal areas that is breaking them down, the stones at the beaches are laid bare as there is no sand to support the fissures of landing sites. This is ugly for our eco-tourism development and we want the Environmental Protection Agency to give its focus to these areas.
The Ministry of Tourism and Culture also has a role to play in this. Sometime ago they established the idea of Beach Wardens and Marshalls to take full care and control of the beaches, they are not their anymore, and their role was quite important. We are calling on them to see the need why our eco-water system should be safeguarded and protected. Eco-tourism is one asset to showcase to foreign tourists, and this commodity is not only attracting a number of visitors but it also helps to provide foreign exchange in the country’s economy.
We call on the EPA once more to act if not now, promptly.
