Three minutes with SO Williams

In a three minute interview, Brigadier SO Williams, the Acting Chief of Defence Staff spoke to the Abu Bakarr Sulaiman Tarawally, the Acting Editor of Sierra Express on what difference the Armed Forces Magazine publication will create in the news market.

Tell us as Editor–in-Chief of the DEFENDER Magazine what role it will serve the readers?

It is serving as a mouthpiece of the Armed Forces. It covers our activities over a period and of course current activities we have and our aspirations for the future.

Talking about this magazine, is it a short cut you have devised to give military classified information to the public?

Definitely not, classified information would not come out in a magazine which is subject to public readership.

How is it guiding us to be able to source our military stories proper?

The question of sourcing information in the military is something that is defined. We have designated officers, the Public Relations Unit and the Defence Spokes person who are authorised to speak on behalf of the armed Forces.

Sometime as news processors we are troubled in designating your ranks how is this magazine helping to define the ranks of your officials?

At some point, it may not have been included in this particular publication, but we will see the need for us to publish the appointment titles of our officials in the current structure in our subsequent interviews.

Do you also attach your directory in this publication?

Of course that also will be published in due course.

What would you say is the quality of this maiden edition?

You heard the Minister when he was launching it; the quality of the magazine is good. You also viewed it; I think a lot of design was put into that magazine to make it colourful and attractive

What would you say about the Editorial stance?

Well, the editorial stance is an independent viewpoint. Although as a military we are working under regulated guidelines, we will also not be coming as fast as the civilian newspapers or magazines.

Are you operating under IMC’s supervisions?

Well it is a question I never thought of, but I want to believe so because we also have professional media officials in the armed forces that are in charge of the publication.
