Theo Nicol – I will be the best Mayor for Freetown
Theo Nicol is a veteran journalist who has served in various media houses. He has also been one of the most prolific writers and has contributed to important issues affecting Sierra Leone. In this interview, Mr. Theo Nicol (in photo) talked with Sierra Express Media about his commitment, his political plans and what he sees as the best for the people of Sierra Leone. Please read on.
SEM: Can you give a brief background about your life?
Theo Nicol: I am basically a journalist. I have worked in all the media in the country and I write a regular column in the local press. I was the Managing Director of African Young Voices (AYV) and now I plan to be the Mayor of Freetown. I was born in 1960, and I attended the Albert Academy and Fourah Bay College. I also studied in Nigeria and in Lagos where I studied computer. I have also edited several newspapers both in Nigeria including the popular Today’s Choice newspaper as well as in Sierra Leone and in the United Kingdom where I worked in London. I am also a media consultant.
What motivated you to abandon journalism in favour of politics?
I entered politics to prove good leadership for my people. That is what I am working on, and that is what I believe is of positive development for the betterment of the country. It does not make sense to criticize from the side line. There is a need for full participation in the political affairs of the country and that is what I am essentially engaged in doing.
What are essentially your plans?
My plan is to reorganize the city and provide social amenities for the city and to ensure that the city is worthy of her respect. I also believe that the city should be brought back to its former position through the provision of tax as part of efforts to rejuvenate the city through good leadership.
It has been said that the mayorship is always seemingly reserved for Krios. Any comment?
Yes it is. The mayorship is like the Paramount Chieftaincy in the provision. Example, in the case of Kailahun, only a man or woman from Kailahun is expected to serve. In the case of the mayorship of Freetown, it is the same with the Krios seen as the rightful owners to occupy such a position.
Under which political party do you wish to contest?
The All People’s Congress of course, if given the symbol.
Do you hope to win?
I am certain of my success. If given the symbol, I have the belief that I will emerge victorious.
