K-One: “Big Fish is not a musician but a conman”
One of Sierra Leone’s leading musicians, K-One revealed to Sierra Express Media’s Entertainment desk in an exclusive interview, how he came to become a music icon in Sierra Leone’s musical scene and how he also helped to create several stars in the industry through his personal support. Read on.
How did you come into music?
I started music in 1993 with Kao De Nero with a crew name known as Kao Pound. I, Kao, Sleze and Jero were members of this group. From there we changed the plan to Black Leo with me, K-One, Jero and Kao De Nero and we started to present Black Leo on stage. I was one of the founding members. However, because of misunderstanding between Black Leo and Dry Eye Crew, I withdrew because I didn’t want to be drawn into it. I left and went to Carl Boxx. From Carl Boxx, Kay Man signed a one year contract with me under the Bingo Unit Records which I successfully undertook and completed. Currently I am engaged in solo work and I have just completed my latest album titled ‘When You Smile’ which I personally funded with tracks like ‘I Don’t Want To Be Lonely’, ‘Giving You Love’ and ‘1961’ which I did featuring Miss. Julie and Buberry Mackie.
Which kind of music do you play?
I play R& B, Hip-hop and Afro Pop.
What is your main focus as a musician –and in your message and lyrics, what do they usually contain?
I am a revolutionist in music and I believe in the right of the people in all parts of the world. That is why I use all various methods of bringing out the truth about the world and the sufferings of the people.
Any comment about the situation which resulted into the alleged shootings and court case between Big Fish and LAJ?
Big Fish is not a musician, he is a conman. I will not want to comment on the issue but I will just make this advice to all Sierra Leonean musicians concerning the manner in which other people are trying to disrupt our industry. I am advising all fans to stop begging musicians for money. They are the ones who are supposed as fans to support us as their stars. The fans feel we have money even though our music is being pirated by criminals and other individuals. Sierra Leone is a small country and we are all sufferers. Now we are afraid of even moving around the streets for fear of being confronted and asked for money. When you do not give them money they even abuse you and this is what has obtained in the case of several musical stars in the country.
What is your last word to your colleague musicians, politicians and the entire nation?
First I say No to violence in the nation both in the domestic home, in schools and on the streets. Also, we as Sierra Leoneans need to change our attitude. In the music industry, we need more promoters. For now, we the musicians have to undertake all the work; from creating the songs on to funding and ultimately production and publicity. I am also appealing to the Government of President Ernest Bai Koroma to discourage the problem of piracy as it is destroying and discouraging talents from flourishing.
