Court case for Maada Bio

Sierra Leone’s main opposition flagbearer, Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio (in photo) is being sketched by the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) party for violating certain sections of the 1965 Public Order Act.

A release put out and signed by Maada Bio questions the situation that surrounded the withdrawal of the special representative of the United Nations secretary general, Michael Von der Schulenburg.

The opposition SLPP is said to have qualified in a press release that two Ministers – Defence and Internal Affairs – in the government of APC have transported a number of ex-combatants to register in the southeast to vote in balance of regional equation ahead of the 2012 elections.

Among other allegations are claims that the APC regrouped alert forces somewhere in the north to wake violence in the 2012 elections.

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) party position is that the SLPP press release is seditious, and has caused doubt to the country’s security status.

Dissenting claims have brewed on the issue and the governing APC party stands tall with a court action threat against the opposition front men.

An SLPP law panelist has dismissed court threat action of the APC, saying it is all a political gimmick.

An SLPP source said however that in a democratic dispensation the opposition has a right to responsible free speech – so to say – those that expose wrong doing of the ruling class.

  • What? Court case for Maada Bio
Court case for the main opposition for been out spoken can be conditional coups that will even result into civil unrest that will throw the APC Government form state house. Is that the kind of democracy that brought president Koroma into power? Press and freedom of speech shouldn’t be tampered with at any cost. Remember who we are with 11 years of violent civil war.
Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma made similar claims during the 2007 elections without been questioned!
It’s because another party is now in opposition? He was preaching violent and clearly demonstrated it by burning down of the then ruling SLPP office, rapping innocence women. The days of one party rule are over and Siaka and Momoh and Bambay political tactic are over. No dirty games please!
