Double trouble for Freetown City Council

Consequent to protest by 600 unpaid workers of the Freetown City Council (FCC), others calling themselves ‘auxiliary market due collectors’ contracted by suspended Mayor Herbert William have threatened strike action if salaries owed them are not paid.

They say management of FCC has to pay them two year six month salaries.

It is a fact that the suspended Mayor of Freetown, few years past, introduced night collection of market dues at respective points in the municipality of Freetown.  It was intended to reach at traders doing businesses during night hours.

Findings are that the night market collectors were recruited due to the low numerical strength of market collectors then at the FCC.  That because the workforce then could not match up to the collection exercises, it was compelling that auxiliary market collectors be recruited to do the job.

A total of one hundred new market collectors were then employed to purposely collect market dues at night.

A female collector who asked for her name not to be mentioned said she expected one year and six months payment for collecting dues during the night and two year six months for day time.

FCC Acting Chief Administrative Officer, John Amadu Conteh said his administration has asked for a bail out of two billion leones from government to enable them to settle salaries owed workers once and for all.

Unconfirmed reports say however that the two billion Leones bail out from government makes no provision for the contracted night collectors at all.
