APC To Win Not Less Than 75 Parliamentary Seats : Secretary-General for the ruling All Peoples’ Congress Party in Sierra Leone, Victor Bockarie Foe has told members of the APC Asia Branch, that even though the party is presently having a majority in Parliament with 59 seats, the target of the party for the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections is to win not less than 75 seats so as to get an absolute majority. Speaking at the official launch of the APC Asia Branch in China on Sunday 18th December, Victor Bockarie Foe assured his party members that the 2012 elections will be won by the APC and that “the APC will win on a clean slate and in a transparent manner with no rigging…” The party, he said, believes in democracy and called on his party membership in Asia to be united and be voter sensitive.
Speaking on the formation of the Asia Branch, Victor Foe said, it is a very difficult task that the membership in Asia has embarked upon but however commended them for the good initiative and that “the formation of the branch in Asia is a big present to the national party back home.” He also called on the Branch to work with, and have respect for the Sierra Leone Embassy.
He disclosed that there has always been a good relationship between the Communist party in China and the APC since the days of Siaka Stevens. Victor Bockarie Foe also informed members about their rights and obligations to the party. He emphasized the need for members to be discipline as “the APC believes that progress goes with discipline… we want our numbers to grow as politics is all about numbers but we also put emphases on discipline” and that everybody has the right to be voted for but that one must be active and be financially supportive of the party.
Speaking earlier, APC National Coordinator for the 2012 elections, Hon. Leonard Logus Koroma said their presence in Beijing, China shows the esteem that President Ernest Bai Koroma has for the Asia Branch “and also shows the esteem he holds for the relationship between Sierra Leone and China and that of the APC party in Sierra Leone and the Communist Party in China.”
Hon Koroma informed the audience about the Biometric system of registration which he said is “transparent and will eliminate elections fraud.” He also said, “this is the first time in the political history of Sierra Leone for four elections to be conducted at the same time and therefore admonished party members and sympathizers in Asia to call on their relatives “to register in all the 2998 registration centers across the country as we have to fill 588 candidates for all the elections”. As a party, Hon Logus Koroma said they are ready for the elections as they are going to campaign on President Koroma’s record on infrastructure, free health care, electricity and agriculture. He called on all to join and ensure a successful campaign and appealed to members to be regular in their loyalty to the party.
In his statement, Chairman for the APC Asia Branch, Lamin Turay commended President Koroma for his development strides back home. The launching of the Asia Branch of the APC, Turay said is timely. He also, on behalf of the Asia Branch, extended appreciation to President Koroma for the appointment of Leonard Logus Koroma as National Coordinator for the APC ahead of the 2012 elections. Such decision, he said “was greeted with open hands and welcomed by the Branch and we want to also official now declare our endorsement of President Koroma as candidate for the 2012 elections.”
Secretary General for the Branch, Hamza Bangura in his statement said the formation of the Asia Branch of the APC is “symbolic and historic… as the Asia continent has now engulfed the global human and socio-economic development in this 21st century”. He gave a background to the formation of the Asia Branch which he said happened when five young APC supporters came together with the idea. Bangura explained further that it was on the 29th of September 2011 that a breakthrough was manifested when the Branch was accorded an official recognition by the National Advisory Council of the APC. The formation of the Branch, he said was born out of the desire and aspiration to strengthen the party by creating its presence in Asia and contribute towards the coming elections. Hamza Bangura assured the delegation from Sierra Leone of the Branch’s relentless and full support to the activities of the APC Party.
Mr. Paul Minah, Acting Head of Mission, Sierra Leone Embassy in China in his welcome remarks assured the audience that the Branch will be in good hands and encouraged all to ensure the good work continue in terms of pushing the Branch to another level. The programme was chaired by Dr. Philip Kargbo, who referred to Victor as a very committed and loyal APC member and encouraged all to emulate his good steps. Dr. Kargbo also spoke about the good works of President Koroma in Sierra Leone.
The handing over of the APC constitution and other documents to the Asia Branch by Victor Bockarie Foe climaxed the occasion. The launching ceremony was attended by members of the Sierra Leone community including Sierra Leone students from various Chinese Universities, diplomats and by Chinese nationals.
