Accident kills 1 injures 5

Superintendent of police Madam Fatmata Monday Kargbo, who doubles as the local unit commander (LUC) told our reporter that a tanker lorry (owned and belonging to Total Petroleum company) loaded with about 4,000 gallons of fuel oil for Koidu town Kono District hit a Renault car that was parked a few yards to the Magbele Bridge waiting for an oncoming vehicles to drive passed the tight bridge.

The tanker lorry number ADV 999 driven by Ibrahim Jalloh of 5 Desmond Street, Wellington, Freetown, bumped into the waiting Renault car AES 784 and hit it from the back.

She said however that the Renault had 6 passengers and was driven by one Abubakarr Kabia including the deceased Catherine Adama Kaloko, a pupil of the Holy Spirit Primary School in Makeni town.

The remaining 5 passengers are reportedly hospitalized at respective health centers in Freetown and Makeni after sustaining very serious injuries.

“The Renault car,” Superintendent Fatmata said, “was beyond repair, adding that the matter is under investigation at the Masiaka police station.

“Masiaka town forms the central point connecting the country (Sierra Leone) to communities including remote villages.”

“Government should begin to contemplate on constructing a police station that can house over a hundred or more police officers, provide them with standard equipment including communication gadgets for efficiency.”

This, she said, will the police sensitizes road users – drivers and passengers – on issues of safety and use of the highways.

She said now that the festive season and the 2012 election are drawing closer, it sounds good if government will pay much attention to issues bordering on the use of highways leading to the provincial towns.
