President Koroma must probe missing Le 880 M cheque

Earlier this week, Sierra Express Media reported the mystery around the missing cheque donated by an investor, Milestone Trading Limited, amounting to Le880 M for the construction of an ‘ultra modern’ market in the municipality of Freetown.

The cheque was presented to His Excellency the President, Dr.Ernest Bai Koroma during a brief ceremony at State House on March 19, 2008 in the presence of the then Trade minister, Alimamy Petito Koroma and her deputy minister, Madam Mabinty Daramy.

When Sierra Express Media contacted Alimamy Petito Koroma now Minister of Works and Infrastructure in order to throw light on the Le880 M cheque saga, the minister admitted that indeed Milestone Trading Limited did donate the said sum to the government of Sierra Leone for the construction of a modern market in Freetown

According to him, the cheque was among the handing documents for the attention of his successor then, Mr. Alfred Carew who was removed from the Finance ministry to take over the Trade ministry.

Carew is no longer in the Ernest Bai Koroma’s cabinet as a minister as he was among the ministers sacked in the last cabinet reshuffle.

Mr. Alimamy Petito Koroma however cited another possibility, if we were to trace the whereabouts of the missing cheque, and that is the Freetown City Council.

As far as the Works minister is concerned the cheque could either be at the Trade Ministry or with City Council.

Now, with this disclosure we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It is just a matter of time for the mystery around the missing cheque to be unraveled.

That is why we called on President Koroma to probe the disappearance of this money. This will require the president setting up a small committee of honest persons to conduct the investigation. Beyond that it should a matter for the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Our concern as a medium lies with the fact that three years on since that money was donated to the government no ultra modern market has been constructed for traders within the municipality of Freetown despite several promises by this government to do so.

Let our president muster the political will to trace this money. 880 million Leones is no chicken money for a starving country like Sierra Leone.

Let the cheque be produced! That’s all we ask for from our president.
