ABC schools QRS girls on early pregnancy

In reaction to the recent Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) report that indicted early pregnancy as a major cause for hundreds of girl-students dropping out from educational mainstream, the Attitudinal and Behavioral Change (ABC) Secretariat on Tuesday October 18, 2011 stormed Queen of the Holy Rosary School to sensitize students on the abnormalities of indulging themselves in early sex.

Addressing the students the National Coordinator and Second-in-Command of ABC, Mrs. Nanette Thomas cautioned them to take their school work seriously because learning is better than silver and gold.  According to her, education is more reliable, profitable, and worthy than material things.  Madam Thomas went on to advise the students that education cannot be achieved by the practice of bad attitude and behavior. She called on them to refrain from disrespecting elders using limited time on watching un-educative movies and early love making.  The students were further encouraged to be competitive, hard working, confident, and law abiding.  Madam Thomas informed students that regardless of being girls, with proper education they will have the capacity to compete with men for better opportunities in the future.

The National Coordinator frowned at male teachers who are in the habit of sexually abusing and harassing school girls and called on them to rather instead serve as role models.  She concluded by calling on the school authorities to be mindful of the vulnerability of school going girls.

Emphasizing the negative impact of pregnancy, the executive Director of ABC Dr. Ivan Agibola Thomas said apart from destroying the education of girls, it also affects their health.  He touched on the dangers and temptations girls are at puberty.  At puberty Dr. Thomas said girls develop features that attract the opposite sex.  He warned that at this stage girls must avoid immoral sex because they are prone to untimely pregnancy.  He therefore warned them not to join bad friends.

Dr. Thomas observed that economic constrains and certain cultural practices force girls in to early marriage.  He educated the girls to speak out against such practices because it has a negative effect on their educational pursuit.  He advised teachers who are fond of having sex with students to stop doing so.  According to him the act is not only unprofessional but contravenes President Koroma ‘s Agenda for Change which craves for better girl child education.

Making a statement, the Principal of QRS, Miss Mary Bockarie thanked the ABC for partnering with her school.  She welcomed the formation of an ABC Club in QRS because according to her, apart from sexual activities, a host of other odd behaviors in students are affecting them adversely.
