Arrival of fiber optic link
Freetown, 4th October, 2011– The Ministry of Information and Communications wishes to inform the general public that Sierra Leone’s share of the 17,000 KM Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) fibre optic link will arrive in Freetown this weekend.
The vessel that carries the fiber optic cable is currently within the shores of Sierra Leone and will formerly dock and lay the submarine cable at the landing station adjacent the Atlantic club, Lumley Beach on Monday 10th October, 2011.
To make this significant development in our country’s history a success, Government officials, private sector players, civil society organizations, the security forces, women’s organizations, youth groups and the general public are invited to witness the laying of the submarine cable along the Lumley beach.
His Excellency, the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma will receive the fiber optic cable on behalf of the people of Sierra Leone.
The fiber optic cable which spans from France to South Africa will connect 23 countries, either directly or indirectly and will provide a significant boost in broadband access.
According to the Minister of Information and Communications, Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo, connecting Sierra Leone to the rest of the world through the submarine cable is part of His Excellency the President’s Agenda for Change; to provide efficient and affordable telecommunications service to the people of Sierra Leone.
