88 SLPP top guns threaten to quit
Some 88 executive members of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in the northern region are threatening mass resignation from the party following growing frustration on what seems to be a snail pace in the process of selecting a comfortable running mate for 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Reports suggest that dissatisfaction has been brewing within the SLPP as some sections are seeking for the appointment of a northerner or a north-westerner as running mate as the flag bearer is from the south-east.
Investigation has proved that the situation is rowdy in the entire North as there is growing frustration for a regional balance of leadership authority in the SLPP.
The north comprises of 5 districts and 36 constituencies, computing a wholesome percentage of vote casts.
Insider SLPP source claims that the imminent resignation threats would be a major setback in the party’s bid to reclaim victory in the 2012 elections.
This threat, he said, came in reaction to the executive arm of the party’s lethal course on the issue of selecting or appointing a running mate contrary to the stipulations of the SLPP’s constitution that says ‘a running mate should have been selected or appointed within a period not exceeding three months after the delegates conference is being held.’
Meanwhile, the SLPP executive is said to have been spearheading a series of consultative meetings with the flag bearer on the choice of a running mate whose opinion concerning the northern region executive reveals having a running mate that is influential and able to win the north and Western Area electorates.
