Fourah Bay College (FBC), University of Sierra Leone – New Department of Social Work
The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law at FBC informs the public and potential persons interested in earning a degree in social work education that the Department of Social work, which is new and approved by the University Senate, will start offering a Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) degree in the coming academic year 2011-2012.
The Social Work Department at FBC is affiliated and supported by the University of Texas at Arlington (UT Arlington). Its existence came about through the relentless efforts of a patriotic Sierra Leonean currently at UT Arlington, Dr. Alusine Jalloh (in photo), whose dedication is highly commended.
Currently, the Department is being nurtured by the Department of Sociology at FBC until the end of the aforementioned academic year; after that it will be a stand-alone Department offering the following degrees:
Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW)-Starting date-Academic Year 2011-2012 Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW)-Starting date-Academic Year 2012-2013 Doctor of Science in Social Work (DSSW) -Starting date-Academic Year 2014-2015The mission of the BSSW Program is to prepare entry level generalist social work professionals who will demonstrate ethical leadership in innovative multidisciplinary practice, social reform, and research in diverse groups, institutions, communities and nations. Students will be provided with a range of opportunities to develop broad knowledge and skills base consistent with individual, family, group, institution, community growth and development initiatives. Students are expected to practice using core social work values and examine and resolve ethical dilemmas. Students will be exposed to classroom and field experiences which will enable them to ascertain professional competencies in the use of social interventions and in culturally sensitive generalist social work practice areas.
The BSSW is a four-year degree program; thus, entering students must fulfill the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law general requirements (Math and English).
