Raging fire halts Ecobank
A raging inferno that erupted at the Headquarters of Ecobank Sierra Leone on Lightfoot Boston Street, Freetown yesterday debarred the bank’s operations for the rest of the day.
Even though the cause of the fire is shrouded in unsuspecting mystery, on-lookers have it that it cannot be unconnected to electrical deficiencies.
When our reporter approached the fleeing members of staff at the entrance of the Banking Hall of the building, he was rudely intercepted by a middle aged female staff whose name could not be ascertained.
She refused letting access or rather talk to number of journalist, but rather turned round to using invectives as saying “Na Nature, we nor want nor bis-a-body journalist nar at all”- a comment she uttered in the broadest Krio language.
In translation it is meant that: “the fire incident was natural occurrence and that eavesdroppers such as journalists are not needed at all.”
On lookers became agitated by the utterances of the self styled female banker thus the result of an ensuing argument between the crowd and some banking officials desperately waiting to see the fire put to halt.
An aged woman, who claimed to have engaged on a banking transaction when suddenly the fire erupted, accounted that nobody in the banking hall knew what went wrong.
“All what we heard was fire! Fire! Fire! She blamed the unruly female staff for her hostile response to journalists and therefore said that that was how workers of the Sierra Leone State Lottery made off with monies from the safe and set the building ablaze, yet nothing came out of it.
Good number of on-lookers questioned the safety standards of such a renowned financial institution in the country.
That it sounds odd that such an incident could happen and yet some of the bank’s staff members continue to dampen it in secrecy.
Meanwhile, customers have divested to doing business with the bank’s Rawdon Street branch while the dust settles.
