ASALJIE condems killing of journalist
The Association of Sierra Leone Journalists in Exile (Sydney, Australia) strongly condemns the killing of colleague journalist Ibrahim Foday while he was performing his duty. We join the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and other journalist groups in every part of the world to call for the apprehension and prosecution of his alleged killer/s.
We also appreciate and thank the Sierra Leone government in giving Sierra Leone journalists a safe and healthy ground for them to practice their profession without encumbrance. We are glad to know that journalists are safer in Sierra Leone today than ever before and that the freedom of expression has not been repressed as it had happened in the past. We however urge the government to do more to protect the lives of journalists in the hands of hooligans.
We also humbly ask the government department responsible for the disposal and acquisition of landed property in Freetown and its environs to take drastic steps against conmen who play dubious commercial games with landed property and end up involving gullible journalists to defend them. We should not forget that another colleague Harry Yansaneh’s tragic death was not unconnected with property dispute. Who knows how many more journalists in Sierra Leone will follow if the government does not take urgent and drastic steps.
