Police constable arrested over killing of journalist
Freetown – Police in the east of Freetown have arrested Police Constable Musa Samura, alias Bartez, of the Operational Support Division (OSD) as suspect in the killing of journalist Ibrahim Foday of the Exclusive Newspaper.
Ibrahim was stabbed to death on Sunday 12 June at Grafton in the outskirts of Freetown apparently as he was covering a riot involving two communities over a disputed piece of land. He had published stories about the contentious land which people in one of the disputing communities, Kossoh Town, did not like.
PC Samura is believed to have aided the stabbing of the journalist by holding him as he tried to flee the melee. He is a resident of Kossoh Town, a community whose headman, Victor Haffner has also been arrested. The headman’s driver, known only as Tunday and believed to have stabbed the journalist, is on the run. Police have assured they will get him.
“We will not rest until the killers of Ibrahim are brought to justice” assures Umaru Fofana, President of SLAJ. “Sierra Leonean journalists must not continue being the endangered species we seem to have become” he goes on, adding that this is a litmus test for the country’s media and people.
Ibrahim is survived by his 16-year-old daughter and his 7-year-old son. His funeral has now been fixed for Tuesday 21 June 2011 at the St Martins church on Blackhall Road and interment at the Kissy Road cemetery.
