Who killed Ibrahim Foday?
The media fraternity in Sierra Leone received news of the brutal death of an ace reporter of the Exclusive newspaper, Ibrahim Foday with utter shock.
The tragic incident took place at the Grafton axis past weekend, but details of his death are still sketchy.
There are conflicting versions leading to the sad event. One version of the incident says Ibrahim had gone to Grafton to investigate a long standing dispute between the community and some disabled group of people, when some irate youths chased and attacked him and he was subsequently stabbed to death.
Another version maintained that the late man was part of a land deal and that he has been repeatedly reporting in his newspaper the said land issue much to the annoyance of one of the aggrieved parties.
It is not yet clear if Ibrahim Foday was an interested party to the dispute but report says the deceased was stabbed to death not because he was a journalist out there on official duty, but seen as a party to the dispute.
Whichever version holds true, the fact of the matter is that the local media has lost yet another of its active members under very controversial circumstances.
As a matter of fact, journalists are themselves members of their respective communities and, like other members in the community they are often constrained to disengage themselves from issues affecting the community.
Ibrahim could have fallen victim due to his association within his community, and journalists being the endangered species of the human race, the deceased could have been targeted simply because of his role in that community.
It is because we believe that Ibrahim did not deserve such a cruel and untimely death that we strongly urge the police to investigate the circumstances leading to his demise.
Besides being a journalist, Ibrahim Foday is a citizen of this country who under any circumstance must enjoy the protection of the state. If he was killed over a land dispute, as the story seems to suggest, let the public know who killed him or those responsible for his death.
