Ivory Coast secure 2012 place
Ivory Coast have qualified for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals with two games to spare. (Didier Drogba helped himself to two goals)
The Elephants thumped Benin 6-2 in Cotonou on Sunday to take their points tally to 12 – a total none of the chasing teams can reach.
Two goals apiece from Gervinho and Didier Drogba helped put the hapless Squirrels to the sword in front of their own fans.
Burundi‘s 3-1 win over visiting Rwanda helped the Elephants’ cause.
Seremani Ndikumana, Saido Ntibazonkiza and Papy Saty scored for the Swallows and Bokota Labama on target for the visiting wasps.
After Ivory Coast, both Burundi and Benin lead the chase with four points, one more than Rwanda.
With hosts Equatorial Guinea and Gabon qualifying automatically, and with Group K winners Botswana already through, a quarter of next year’s finalists are now known.
