Tasso Island neglected

Our reporter sailed to the historic island in the northern provincial axis where he interviewed the only medical personnel, Alfred Bockarie Mansaray.
The wearied sixty–two years old dispenser bemoaned government‘s grave neglect over the Island’s health amenities to the peril of the life of the inhabitants in the three constituent villages that make up the Island.
Mansaray who was transferred from the Endemic Disease Control Unit of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation on the 2nd of June 1979 to act as dispenser in Tasso, pointed out that he is overwhelmingly constrained by the lack of medication for thousands of women, children and the aged. He recalled that when he took over his posting as a field worker, the general health condition in Tasso was encouraging as there was provision of drugs and other medical facilities but these facilities have been ceased for over two decades for some unexplained reasons and all he can do currently is to diagnose and issue out prescriptions to the sick for them to acquire drugs in Lungi, Port Loko and even to Freetown.
He added that he has the only option of referring serious cases to Pepel, Port Loko and Lungi and that there are many reports of untimely death. There is also a conspicuous show of scores of malnourished children within the island.
Incidentally, the top contender of the SLPP Flagbearership who was on a campaign tour to the Island promised to donate assorted drugs to the Island by the weekend and will consider constructing a Health Center for them if he is accorded the flag-bearer ship title of his party.
