AWOL deserves a big, loud applause

Rebuilding Sierra Leone is a gradual process that requires the participation and cooperation of every well-meaning Sierra Leonean. This is the message President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma keeps echoing each time he addresses the nation.  (Photo: members of AWOL)

The President believes politicising issues of national development should play no part in our development process if we are to move forward as a nation. Otherwise, it will only succeed in derailing our development process.

And talking about development brings me to the issue of the All Works of Life (AWOL) – one of the few non-governmental organisations complimenting the development efforts of the President and government of Sierra Leone.

AWOL’s contribution to national development is worth acknowledging and distinct example worth emulating.

As an organisation, AWOL has played and continues to play a pivotal role towards the socio-economic development of the country. Such efforts are clear indications to justify the fact that Sierra Leoneans themselves can take over the destiny of their own nation.

With branches in most overseas countries particularly in the United States of America and the United Kingdom, AWOL is also creating massive impact in raising the profile of Sierra Leone internationally.

Their involvement in the 50th Golden Jubilee celebrations is not something we should sweep under the carpet unnoticed – rather it is a development that deserves high level commendation to serve as a bright example for others to follow suit.

It is of course no secret that Sierra Leoneans had lost confidence and trust in the men and women in charge of the anniversary celebrations shortly after the William Conteh administration was indicted in a massive corruption scandal.

It was organisations like AWOL that came to the rescue bringing back to life the already dying euphoria; they added flavour to it and eventually electrified the entire anniversary celebrations by engaging in strategic landmark achievements.

Take for example the beautification of the country particularly the Lungi International Airport and the two roundabouts at Aberdeen.

Quite apart from these, AWOL embarked on activities such as quiz competitions for secondary schools and universities; and above all the launching of the Pride Month at the Attouga Mini Stadium.

These were events that brought massive awareness to the Sierra Leonean community – not to talk about the unforgettable Green-White-and-Blue Jubilee Jamboree of April 27 at the National Stadium that brought together both local and international music stars from across the African continent.

AWOL has set a solid pace for others to follow in future – and for me, the history books of the Golden Jubilee Anniversary celebration would never be complete if we fail to mention and acknowledge the significant contributions of AWOL.

Join me in giving them a big and loud applause!
