Woman in court for possession of drugs

Yvette Haffnah, who stands charged for possession of drug ‘carnabi sativa’ yesterday made her first appearance before Magistrate Wellington of court No. 2 to answer to 3 count charges. 

The accused was arraigned before the court on charges of unlawful possession of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa, disorderly behavior and loitering with intent – contrary to law. 

In the particulars of the offence it is stated that on Saturday 19th March, at Marshal Street Fourah Bay, the accused was found in possession of five parcels of dried leaves believed to be Cannabis Sativa. 

She was also charged with disorderly behaviour and loitering with intent contrary to law. 

While tendering the exhibits in court, police constable Alusine Sesay, who works as exhibit clerk Central Police Station, told the court that on the 19th he was on duty when five parcels of dried leaves believed to be Diamba were submitted to him for safe keeping by police constable 8589 Cowan. 

He furthered that after receiving the exhibits he registered it with serial number 20/2011. 

Defence lawyer, Crispin Fio Edwards, applied for bail and made reference to sections in criminal procedure act of 1965. 

The accused was refused bail owing to the nature of the matter. 

In his statement, Magistrate Wellington ruled that the accused person was charged under the drugs control act of 2007 and that he will consider bail after listening to the testimony of the first witness. 

The matter has been adjourned to March 23rd and it is expected that the prosecution will start its case on the second appearance. 

In another development, Magistrate Wellington committed a matter involving one Amara Sesay aka Manager to the high court for further hearing. 

Amara was arraigned before Magistrate Wellington on a count charge of conspiracy to commit a felony. 

Giving his ruling, Magistrate Wellington said that the matter was before him for PI and that witnesses have testified against the accused person. 

He said thereafter that he had considered statements of the witnesses including the policy reports. 

That he is satisfied there is sufficient evidence and so, decided to commit the matter to the high court for trial.
