Training day at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Washington DC

The staff at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Washington DC observed this past Wednesday and Thursday, 16 and 17 March 2011, as training days. The training, the first of its kind, targeted all staff, both diplomatic and local; and it was designed to equip staff, especially front line staff that deal with members of the public, on how to handle clients and other stakeholders. The training “Effective Workplace Communication and Interaction, focusing on Assertiveness” was designed and conducted by N Wellington Associates llc.

The goal of the training was to identify the different types of communication, to make staff more assertive not passive or aggressive, and for staff to acculturate open and honest communication to foster an environment of mutual respect.

In a telephone conversation with the Ambassador who identified the training need, he said that the idea was to make the Sierra Leone Embassy a learning organization as a strategy to realize the full potential of staff and to meet with the increasing demands of modern day diplomacy. The outcome was to serve members of the public be they Sierra Leoneans or non Sierra Leoneans, in a professional and diligent manner.

A feedback assessment conducted at the end of the two-day training programme reflected total satisfaction by staff who observed that they have acquired and learned some new skills which they will now have to put into practice for the benefit of the Embassy, the government and the various clients that they serve.
