Airtel Puts Premium on Education in Sierra Leone

Airtel, the winner of the AWOL mobile telecommunications company of the year 2010 has manifested its true number one status in Sierra Leone by putting premium in Rural Education campaign, an initiative significantly needed in Sierra Leone today. The company has adopted the REC School in Tombo as a pilot school and more schools will be adopted in other strategic deprived rural communities in the country. Since airtel is yearning to be the most loved brand by 2015, embarking in adopting more schools in strategic rural communities is a step in the right direction. This initiative will help compliment the Millennium Development Goal of sustainable Primary Education for all by 2015.

Education is the pillar for the development of any society. And for any society to compete in terms of development, its must has the necessary human resources. Education is a method of building the human capacity in any society. The fifth largest mobile telecommunication in the world which unarguably, is number one in Sierra Leone, airtel has put maximum selflessness on education in the country.

This initiative was rooted from the Bharti Foundation, the umbrella body based in India which has adopted over 700 rural schools in that country. Airtel has transformed this initiative in Sierra Leone by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Education Science and Technology so as to adopt more government primary schools in strategic rural communities in the country.

Over the years, the company has been implementing many developmental programmes in the form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR); it has now decided to put education as a priority.  The Rural Education Committee (REC) School in Tombo has been selected to benefit from this initiative. The company is currently working on refurbishing the whole school buildings; providing furniture, scholastic materials, and basic motivating stipends for teachers, and many more. The pupils are going to be fed on monthly basis.

In order to fulfill the dreams of the Tombo community, workers at airtel have vowed to remotely adopt high number of school pupils on their own.  Those school pupils would be provided with the necessary school materials and they will be monitored on to certain level of their educational career while still with their parents. This is a complete change of attitude as high numbers of airtel staff were on the site at Tombo helping the community people to clean the school campus. In fact, some have voluntarily registered to serve as temporary teachers on a long term basis.

The company aims to set up village-based Schools that will deliver high quality education to deprived rural children in Sierra Leone. The Rural Education Committee School in Tombo is a pilot to this initiative and will soon spread in other strategic rural communities in the country. The Schools that will be adopted are primary-level schools that are being set up with the guiding philosophy to create temples of learning, radiating knowledge and excellence for underprivileged children.
