African Minerals pay $10M expatriate tax

African Minerals pay $10M expatriate tax

FREETOWN: Expatriate tax totaling ten million dollars has been paid by the African Minerals to the Government of Sierra Leone.

The amount represents tax obligations for expatriates working with the African Mineral, which mines Africa’s largest iron ore deposits in Koinadugu and Tonkolili districts in northern Sierra Leone.

Mines and Mineral Resources Minister Minkailu Mansaray (in photo), who presented the cheque of ten million Dollars to President Ernest Bai Koroma at State House in Freetown, commended the mining company for honouring its obligations, referring to it as a brighter example.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of government, President Ernest Bai Koroma said the money will go a long way towards implementing Agenda for Change programmes which benefit citizens of this country.

“Everybody is happy with what is presently happening in the country, with regards government’s implemented projects. Even if you are blind, you will feel it”, he noted.

The President commended African Minerals for working within the framework of the law in honoring its obligations and thanked the Mines Minister Mansaray for the effective monitoring and supervisory roles he is playing.

President Koroma then handed over the cheque to the Finance and Economic Development Minister Samura Kamara commended African Minerals for the prompt tax payment which promotes the company’s honour and sincerity to the nation, as well as fulfill government’s infrastructural obligations.

  • Taxes are one major way that the government earn revenues. Through taxes, the government is rendered economically viable to establish programs, build infrastructures, and provide for the defence of the citizens. Bravo to Africa mining for being an upstanding corporation in paying their taxes. They have set a precedent to hold others accountable to.
