Fisheries Minister honoured in Morocco
Sierra Leone’s Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister, Dr. Soccoh Kabia (in photo) was among two out of ten African ministers selected and accorded the opportunity to present awards to participants with the best fishing technology, fish processing, handling and marketing procedures at the end of a three-day International Fisheries Trade Exhibition held in Agidir, Kingdom of Morocco.
Organised by the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture of the Kingdom of Morocco, the programme which attracted ten African Ministers involved in Marine fishing, Fish farming and the development of fisheries products the exhibition was also attended by the Director of Fisheries Alpha Bangura and two representatives from the Industrial Fishing Sector in Sierra Leone on the invitation of the Conference of African States bordering the Atlantic Ocean (ATLAFCO). It also showcased best practices in Aquaculture, including fish feed production systems.
In a meeting with his colleagues ministers from Cameroon, Guyana Nigeria and host Moroccan Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Kabia thanked the organisers for the invitation accorded them, pointing out that the show created a forum for them to interact and see how best they could collaborate with partners to develop the fisheries sector in the region. He intimated to them about initiatives undertaken by government with a view to revamping the fisheries sector in Sierra Leone, including the construction of fisheries infrastructures and plans to re-establish the country’s marine training institute among others.
Highlights of the programme included the visit of King Mohamed V1of Morocco to Sierra Leone’s booth where a variety of frozen fish products were exhibited by the Sierra Fishing Company. The Minister of Fisheries and entourage also visited the country’s Marine Institute,(Institut Superieur des Peches Maritime), where they were warmly welcomed and taken on a conducted tour of the institute’s facilities such as the Engineering, Navigation and fish processing department. During discussions with Senior Management Staff of the Institute, it was agreed that bilateral cooperation between the two countries, especially in the areas of fisheries management and development be established. It was also agreed that contact be initiated to enhance the visit of the Marine Minister’s visit to the fisheries of Morocco.
Presentations by scholars on various topics, including Resources and Marine Ecosystems faced with global changes, Aquaculture, the stakes and development perspectives, opportunities and trend in the market formed part of the three day programme which was officially opened by King Mohamed V1 of Morocco.
