What outrageous speculation

The peaceful and orderly nature of SLPP meetings and conventions is legendary. Never in our history have we come out of meetings bruised and spent, nor has there ever been an occasion when law enforcement agencies have been invited in. Even in the Kenema convention of 2009 when there was an induced speculation of a verbal attack on former President Tejan-Kabbah and his wife, the police detachment which was sent to the Holy Trinity hall just in case spent the whole time resting peacefully in the shade. Never has any of our gatherings ended in disarray. Of course we have had disagreements which have been very loud sometimes but never ever out of control. This makes me wonder as to what Elias Bangura writing in the for-di-people newspaper of Monday February 21 anticipating. in a front page headline of the newspaper he writes, “MARCH 5- MARCH TROUBLE; HOW PREPARED ARE THE POLICE? Prepared for what if I may ask the columnist?  (Photo: Dr. Sama Banya)

It is said that it is from the bachelor’s eve that one may speculate on the success of a wedding ceremony. Our 19 flag bearer aspirants have been criss-crossing the country on their campaigns for the last several months. They quite often met simultaneously in the same venue; on other occasions the party executive has show-cased them collectively at various regional headquarters as well as in the western area, Kono and Waterloo. The atmosphere on every occasion has been carnival like, with the aspirants exchanged banalities etc. There has not been a single occasion that could have been described as disorderly.

The only ugly incidents have been those perpetrated by elements of the ruling All Peoples’ Congress Party (APC) as happened in Kono on two separate occasions. This is why I find Elias Bangura’s speculation both repulsive and repugnant.

Of course it is the responsibility of the Police always to be alert in large gatherings of people in case of any eventuality. But Bangura’s article is pointed as if disorderly behaviour is a hall mark of the SLPP.

Before the last emergency meeting of the National Executive Council there was speculation in a certain newspaper of fireworks emanating from there. It didn’t. Then more trouble was expected from the emergency delegates’ meeting in Bo, and there again NOTHING HAPPENED.

My advice to the so very ‘concerned friends of the SLPP’ is to mind their own businesses as our Party has always displayed a remarkable degree of looking after itself. LONTA!
