Sierra Leone Embassy Strategizes for Successful 50th Independence Anniversary

Ambassador Wusu B. Munu made the statement while addressing Sierra Leone nationals at a well attended 50th Anniversary Planning Meeting at the new, but yet unfurnished chancery building in the north of Riyadh last Friday.

The Ambassador said that Sierra Leone’s Independence on 27th April, 1961 was an important milestone in African history and deserved to be observed and celebrated in a grand style by Sierra Leoneans all over the world.  He added that 27th April should serve a day for all Sierra Leoneans to pay tribute to the founding fathers and mothers of Sierra Leone and all those who fought for the country’s Independence from British rule.

In his remarks, Minister Counselor/ Head of Chancery, Ibrahim S. Yilla said that the celebrations would also be used to showcase the rich and diverse socio-cultural heritage of Sierra Leone.

The Head of Chancery further said that a number of activities, beginning from Monday 25th April, to Friday 29th April, 2011, have been scheduled and that various committees have been set up, including, Organizing, Entertainment and Protocol Services Committees.

Mr. Yilla also said that a series of activities including, Diplomatic Reception, Prayers for the country, Symposium, to name but a few, has also been scheduled and promised to communicate a more detailed programme in due course.

The Ambassador and the Head of Chancery appealed to the Organizing Committee to come out with a programme within the next few days that will allow the entire population of Sierra Leoneans in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other Africans to participate in the celebration.

Reacting, the President of the Sierra Leone nationals, Osman Kargbo on behalf of all Sierra Leoneans resident in the Kingdom thanked the Embassy for involving the Sierra Leone community in the planning stage of the 50th Anniversary Celebration and pledged that the Committees would work tirelessly to make the event a success.

Speaker after speaker noted that: “It is indeed a big honour for all Sierra Leoneans in the kingdom to be asked to help keep the Sierra Leone flag flying high.”
