Government’s position on a so-called strike action by a small group of teachers

Government notes with dismay that an infinitesimal group of teachers has embarked on a path of sabotage and subterfuge through a so-called strike action in Kenema City and Albert Academy Secondary School in Freetown.  (Photo:  Albert Academy, Freetown)

A thorough investigation into this scenario indicates that this minute group is politicizing the very important issue of teachers’ welfare.  Government wishes to inform the general public that the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU), which is the legally-recognized trade union organization for all teachers in this country, has nothing to do with the so-called strike action, and has already issued a press release to that effect on 7th February 2011.

As a responsible and reasonable government therefore, all teachers that are currently refusing to render their much-needed services are urged to go back to their schools and resume their normal work. They are asked to do so within 24 hours of issuance of this notice.  Failure to adhere to this directive will leave government with the alternative of immediately dismissing all those involved.

Already, at a meeting with the Resident Minister, East, Principals and Head Teachers in Kenema City have totally dissociated themselves from the so-called strike action and have urged government to take the necessary action against defaulters.

Government wishes it to be noted that the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance are currently working on a comprehensive salary increase through the Public Sector Pay Reform Package for all public workers, including teachers; and will effect this increment as soon as possible.

However, while this is going on, government will not tolerate any indiscipline from any group or individuals acting outside the ambit of the law.
