What an interesting week

According to reports which were blown out of proportion by an over enthusiastic pro APC media his Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma’s recent visit to the South Eastern region was a very successful one, particularly in the Eastern regional headquarter city of Kenema. The President had, as was the real reason for the visit, presented his new converts including the ones poached from the ranks of the opposition SLPP to the people who were mostly Paramount chiefs (who simply had to be there or else!), to APC supporters in the region with a good percentage of imported audience to lend credence to the occasion. I am reliably informed that the main disappointed person was the newly appointed deputy minister for Presidential and Public Affairs at the citadel of power; a man who had previously vied for the SLPP chair of the then Kenema Town council before his flirtation with the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change, the party of the self-declared benevolent dictator Charles Francis Margai and who finally pitched camp with the declared winners, the APC. The story is that Alhajie Benson Sowu who recently graduated from Bo Teachers’ College as a primary school teacher, the man who was beaten hands down in a political contest with his sibling sister, had hoped that his people of Nyandeyama section would move enmass to the Presidential Lodge to express thanks and gratitude to his Excellency for appointing their own man to a position where he had the President’s ears 24 and half hours a day. To his dismay nothing like that happened; on the contrary the people of Nyandeyama remained largely indifferent. What a sad day it was for poor Benson. But one never knows with officials of the red sun; who can tell, maybe someday he would actually be heard making an official statement in the absence of Alpha Kanu. But that would be the day!  (Photo:  Dr. Sama Banya)

Well, my own nephew Sarti Banya a former popular SLPP youth leader is reported to have received a whopping sum of FORTY MILLION Leones for the youth of Kailahun district. Incidentally the district now boasts, “di pa in yaidem,” as well as Sahr Mokuwa’s newly organized “Friends of Ernest” in the same Kailahun district. What a fortunate President my distinguished ‘nephew’ is. But I did promise that I would always advise him so he would not put a foot wrong and here is a piece of never failing advice from an uncle who is at the point of starvation because Parliament has refused him a pension purely on technical grounds; my appeal is still before your Excellency and dear nephew for Presidential show of mercy. The French will say, ‘déjàvu’ but my Kissi kinsmen would say ‘dia teingain, na maala teingain.’ The gallant SLPP people of Pujehun district would readily explain the Mende equivalent of the above to anyone interested, Paramount Chiefs Jaya Kaikai and honourable Kebbie notwithstanding.

A good journalist is one who is quick to respond to corrections when some of his unreliable reporters blunder. Fayia Amara Fayia who doubles as student in the Eastern Polytechnic and Kenema correspondent of the Standard Times newspaper often tells blatant lies in order to tarnish the reputation of innocent people but his editor ignores corrections to his falsehood. On the other hand the editor of the New Vison newspaper is quick to respond to complaints of the inaccuracy of some of his men, investigates and immediately makes correction. Last week his correspondent Mohamed Vandy told naked lies about the people of Kailahun being angry with the SLPP national chairman John Benjamin for, in Vandy’s words neglecting to visit them. JOB was in the district during the Christmas holidays, travelling as far as Buedu in the Kissi Tongi chiefdom and holding fruitful discussions with party members. On another occasion he came out with a damaging but false story about Paramount Chief Mohamed Sama Kailondo Banya but like the coward he is, shied away from discussing the authenticity of his story even at his editor’s request. My New Vision editor should take with more than a pinch of salt stories from the likes of Mohamed Vandy who may just be in the pay of people.

See next edition for the tactics of the notorious academic bootlicker and sycophant per excellence at the Eastern Polytechnic.
