President Goodluck to receive Falcons
NIGERIA’S Super Falcons, who on Sunday defied all odds to reclaim the African Women Championship trophy from Equatorial Guinea with a 4-2 victory in South Africa, have started reaping the fruits of their labour.
The triumphant Falcons now in Lagos after taming Equatorial Guinea in the final 4-2, thanks to two late own-goals from Guinea. Reports from Lagos confirmed to Sierra Express Media that they will be flown straight to Abuja where they will be received by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The tough ladies became No1 again in Africa with some stirring performances in South Africa to get rid of the ghosts of the previous tournament.
From a motorcade through Lagos city and a two way reception from Lagos to Abuja officials told journalists at the Mutala Mohammed airport – “We will have an airport reception for them in Lagos as soon as they arrive. Then they will be flown straight to Abuja.”
“We will also have an airport reception for them there, and then they will be taken in a bus parade into Abuja, where we will now hold a hotel reception for them.”
The team will then proceed to the Presidential Villa, where they will be officially received by the Nigeria President.
The team will be given a two-day break on Tuesday 16/11/10, before returning to camp this weekend to prepare for their international friendly against Germany on November 22.
Nigeria participated in the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in 1991 (China), 1995 (Sweden), 1999 and 2003 (USA) and China (2007). The Falcons’ best effort has been a quarter-final berth at USA 1999.
